Dutch Yacht Builder Settles for €150,000 Over Use of Non-Compliant Timber
The Dutch Public Prosecution Office (OM) has reached a settlement of € 150,000 with a Dutch yacht builder for the use of Myanmar teak that did not meet the requirements outlined in Regulation (EU) no. 995/2010, or the European Union Timber Regulation, which was replaced by Regulation (EUDR - EU Deforestation Regulation) 2023/1115 (EUDR) in 2023. This timber was used during the construction of a superyacht.

As Russia’s aggression against Ukraine continues with Belarus’s active support, the European Union has implemented extensive sanctions aimed at limiting the economic capacities of both nations. This sanctions framework, which also includes restrictive measures on Belarus, seeks to curb the financial and logistical support facilitating these actions. Given the close ties between the Russian and Belarusian economies, however, entities in both countries have developed complex methods to circumvent these sanctions—often through third-country jurisdictions. These efforts to evade sanctions present a substantial compliance risk for EU operators.
